The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
