Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But a few are not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
However, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of files that included little previously unseen information.
