Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
