Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then found numerous other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
