Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
