WHO Sounds Alert Over Critical Shortage of Obesity Medications

Fewer than one in 10 individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it publishes its first recommendations on the medications.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now living with obesity, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

According to forecasts, more than two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with thorough and continuous care," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are significant obstacles to widespread access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, says the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Despite the current most optimistic outlook, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies might only reach approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, per the health organization.

The advice calls on nations and manufacturers to increase access, via approaches like voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on semaglutide – the primary ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

The injections mimick a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and increase the sense of being full so users reduce food intake.

People usually begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of beginning the weekly injections.

Studies suggests users may regain a significant portion within a year of stopping the drug, because their typical food cravings resume.

Being carrying excess weight increases your likelihood for contracting health problems, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific cancers.

Obesity concerns individuals in countries worldwide and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
